Raised in the slums by various shifting caretakers and minor gangs who could find use in children for small tasks, she was a brighter child than was strictly wise, possessed with a ravenous curiosity and clever fingers which lent themselves to tinkering and fine disassembly. Before long, she was roaming as part of a ragtag group of older orphans that might have qualified as a gang itself. Operating mostly independently in Stabs territory, they were begrudgingly tolerated, due to them being useful when relations were good, and due to shows of force otherwise, as Nicoletta's gifts manifested themselves in nasty spring-loaded traps, rigged bolt shooters, rudimentary toy wind-up machines laden with knives. Her best friend was a scruffy self-taught mage who she had known since childhood, all but a sister to her. Together they built what Nicoletta considered her best works, chief among them an actual working medium-scale ballista with supplementary magic-imbued modules. Despite her friend's protests, she insisted on calling it the Flinger. They aged together into early adulthood, her life seemingly as stable as things ever got in the slums. But nothing lasted forever. Her friend was a prodigy in her own right, and one day a well-dressed woman found them, clearly an eccentric from the rich side of town. Claiming to have been tracking extraordinary talent, she offered Nicoletta's friend employment. Of course her friend refused. But a week later, her friend disappeared - and as rumors had it, ended up working under that woman anyway whether by choice or under duress. Without her and without the ability to perform routine maintenance, Nicoletta was forced to strip the magical parts from her machines after failing to negotiate with other stray mages, much less the Magos. What was more, her increasing preoccupation with chasing down rumors of her friend and accumulating wealth led to her biggest mistake: selling to the Bulls on the side, and stealing supplies from the Stabs to meet demand to boot. The Stabs didn't much like that. She had always simply been tolerated. Seen as too much trouble to deal with. Now their full attention was on her, and she found her group scattered, herself marked for death. The only piece of luck she had was that many people were always slated to be killed in the slums, and she was able to escape notice long enough that she wasn't on top of that list anymore. But it wouldn't last, not unless she found some other group to throw in with. Several weeks later, Nicoletta was spotted wheeling in a certain homemade ballista into the offices of the Uhambra Guard Force.
